Halian Provides Resources to Multi-Billion Pound Government Project for Sun Microsystems |
Introduction
Supporting large mission critical operations is nothing new to Halian,
but this multi-billion pound project is a showcase for the company’s
core strengths requiring expertise in Halian’s three key technology
areas that include Oracle, microsoft, and UNIX. Sun Microsystems
engaged Halian to provide critical round the clock support that often
required specialist skill sets and much experience to one of the
largest network infrastructures in the world.
Background
This nationwide programme involved a number of major companies working
with a large government agency to modernise their IT infrastructure,
which serves thousands of individuals in critical roles across the UK.
Once the infrastructure was in place, which was made up of high
availability clusters of 15ks and E-10ks, Sun Microsystems recognised
the need to bring in a trusted partner with access to specialist skills
sets and resources to ensure that there would never be a service
outage. Halian was chosen for their proven ability to support
heterogeneous systems, including Oracle, microsoft and UNIX; as well as
their record for delivering 24 X 7 mission critical support to a number
of high profile Sun customers.
Over the past 18 months, Halian has increased its resource to over 50
people working in multiple locations across the UK involving all three
key technology areas.
Our Solution
Halian is providing first line support for an amalgamation of IT
systems, which in turn are running many mission critical applications,
and have been configured to provide optimum resiliency and multiple
levels of redundancy at all levels. As well as providing 24 X 7 support
Halian is also carrying out proactive maintenance to ensure that the
programmes high availability requirements are achieved.
The project initially involved substantial Oracle migrations and a
transition from an existing supplier. Halian has since ramped up the
resource from 3 Oracle 9i RAC DBAs to 8 plus 1 team leader who are now
supporting multiple, multi-terabyte Oracle instances across the UK.
With only one hour outages planned or unplanned it was important that
Halian had the right team of experienced people in place to provide 24
X 7 support. Halian’s resourcing capability has shone through on this
programme rising to the challenge of finding Oracle 9i and 10g RAC
specialists in response to the growing complexity of the estate.
Halian’s proactive long term approach to developing a network of Oracle
technical specialists has proven it’s ability to scale up the team at
short notice with no discernable impact on delivery or quality.
Halian has a team of 16 highly experienced people supporting and
managing a growing microsoft server estate of over 800 servers across
numerous locations from London to Glasgow. All servers are duplicated
at a different site to provide complete failover and with a Service
Level Agreement demanding 90-minute restoration of services there is
little room for error, but to date there has been 100% availability.
Halian offers Onsite support from 8 am to 6 pm everyday, with on call
support (out of hours) across the UK. Frontline services are also
offered through a team of 8 people working on a rota basis to provide
24-hour cover in a service operations centre. The team regularly log
incidents, as well as alerting people to problems, then dealing with
issues, and has an impressive 91% first time fix ratio. The support
processes that have been implemented by Halian are ITIL compliant and
escalation of serious issues are dealt with in a matter of minutes with
more serious incidents requiring regular 10-minute update calls to the
client.
The team have a many years business experience, are all security
cleared, 5 – 6 years MSCE accreditation, and boast a wide range of
technical skills sets including CCNA, and knowledge of new technologies
such as VMware. Halian associates are used to working in pressurised
environments, on large mission critical projects, and as such have been
involved in making recommendations for and reviewing system designs to
ensure that they are workable and will not have a knock on affect to
existing systems.
Outcomes/Benefits
Halian has been able to provide a substantial amount of experienced
resource and skills to this vitally important UK wide programme for Sun
Microsystems on one of the largest network infrastructures in the
world. As well as having the necessary technical skills, the people
that Halian have allocated to the projects have also had relevant
business and industry skills to guarantee a good cultural fit and
ensure successful results.
With the project set to run until 2012 the team of Halian resource
continues to grow to meet the demands and needs on this nationwide
programme.
